Missy Elliot has been MIA for awhile while she’s been battling the autoimmune disorder Graves’ Disease. Thankfully, she says she’s feeling better and is getting it under control!
Missy Elliot always seemed strong, sturdy and invincible — but the 39-year-old rapper’s body began to fail her a couple years back and she discovered she had Graves’ Disease, which is the most common form of hyperthyroidism. After retreating from the spotlight in order to battle the disease, Missy is feeling back in control and opened up for the first time about her dramatic life-altering experience.
“I was (driving and) trying to put my foot on the brake, but my leg was jumping. I couldn’t keep the brake down and almost crashed… I couldn’t write because my nervous system was so bad – I couldn’t even use a pen,” she told People Magazine.
Not only that, but Missy also started experiencing hair loss and mood swings — also common side effects of the illness. Although Graves’ Disease is incurable, Missy tried radiation, which helped her overcome many of the uncomfortable side effects — and thankfully, it helped!
“My thyroid is functioning, so I haven’t had to take medication in about nine months. [But] you live with it for the rest of your life,” she said, adding, “I’m 30 pounds lighter because I’ve been exercising. My thyroid is functioning, so I haven’t had to take medication in about nine months. (But) you live with it for the rest of your life.”
We’re sorry to hear about Missy’s condition, but are thrilled to know she’s feeling better. Hopefully, she’ll be back in the studio soon!
